José Francisco Borges is a distinguished Brazilian poet and woodcut artist, born in 1935 in the small town of Bezerros, Pernambuco. He taught himself to make woodcut prints to put on the cover of his booklets, "Literatura de Cordel" or "Stories on a String" which were often suspended on lines in outdoor market booths.  J. Borges has been widely recognized as a master folk artist and is represented in the collections of several museums in the U.S., Europe and Brazil.
